The eight seasons
The changes in nature and the year of the reindeer herder is the base of
the old Sámi way to divide the seasons.
Dálvve/winter
From Christmas to the end of February it is winter. The reindeers are in
the forest for their winter grazing, join us on a visit to them. Your
guide for the day is well informed, active as he och she is within the
reindeer herding business
Gidádálvve/springwinter
From the beginning of March to the 25th of April it is springwinter. The
mountain Sámis move their reindeers to the lower mountains. A wonderful
time in our part of the world, join us for a dog-sledging trip or a
snowmobile safari and try your luck at ice-fishing.
Gidá/spring
From the 25th of April to the 25th of May it is spring. The reindeer
calves are born. The light has returned to the land of the Sámis.
Socialize with your collegues on a competition evening with dinner.
Gidágiesse/springsummer
From the 25th of May to the 25th of June it is springsummer. During the
end of this season the reindeer herding families move to their summer
settlement in the mountains. For those interested in plants this is the
season to be here, one can almost hear how it is growing around us.
Giesse/summer
From the 25th of June to the 25th of August it is summer. Time to mark the
reindeer calves. Join us for this special occasion during the reindeer
herding year.
Tjaktjagiesse/autumnsummer
From the 25th of August to the middle of September it is autumnsummer. The
culling of the reindeer stags take place. The days get shorter, the nights
get colder and the mosquitoes disappear. A good time to go hiking.
Tjaktja/autumn
From the middle of September to the 15th of October it is autumn. The
reindeers are mating. Bring your friends or collegues on a Sámi evening
in the traditonal Sámi tent with dinner and entertainment.
Tjaktjadálvve/autumnwinter
From the 15th of October to Chrismas it is autumnwinter. The mountain Sámis
move their reindeers to the forests. Cold, dark and starry nights with
northern lights. Join us on a snowmobile safari under the skies of the
northern hemisphere, experience both darkness and light.
