The winter has arrived in Jokkmokk, ice covers the rivers and lakes and the snow and frost adorn the trees. The entire landscape lies dorment, scilent and white.

The winter market in Jokkmokk is 400-years old in 2005. This annual event takes place during the first Thursday in February and lasts for three days. During these hectic market days the population of Jokkmokk tenfolds so in order to find somewhere to stay you have to book plenty in advance. In Jokkmokk this winter feast is so important that the locals talk about events before or after the market rather than events before or after new years eve.

Snowmobile safari in the forest with overnight stay
Jokkmokk municipality is the second largest municipality in Sweden with regards to the surface, (19 000 km2) here is plenty of snowmobiling to be done! This particular trip takes us miles from Jokkmokk, across lakes and through forests towards the mountain range. We stay overnight in a kåta, the traditional tent of the Sámis. A wood-burning stove and good sleeping bags keeps us warm during the night.
