Ear-marking of the reindeer calfs
There are no wild reindeers in Sweden. Every reindeer is owned by somebody, you can tell who the reindeer belongs to by the marked ears. In a corral the calf follows it´s mother, that is how you can tell who the calf belongs to.
The marking of the reindeers takes place during the night when it is cooler and less strenuous for the animals. The calf-marking corrals of the mountain Sámi are often situated in the mountains with no roads leading to them. To be able to reach these places you either walk on foot or fly helicopter. You sleep in a tent or a kåta (the traditional tent of the Sámi). If you should happen to pass a calf-marking whilst hiking it is important to remember that this is a working area.
It is a special experience to be present at a calf-marking. The light, the sound and the nature combined with the several hundred years old spectactle that takes place on the mountain is an unbeatable combination.
It is impossible to guarantee time and place for a calf-marking in advance. However, if you are spending a few days in Jokkmokk in July it is worth keeping in touch with us if you would like to join us for this
event.

| The reindeer belongs to the
deer-family. Both sexes have antlers that they lose every year and new ones grow out. The stag has the largest antlers, they are fully grown for the rut in September. The female reindeers keep their antlers until spring whilst the stags loose theirs after the rut period. Fully grown female reindeers weigh between 60-90 kg, stags between 100-150 and the calfs weigh between 30-50 kg in the autumn. |
