There are certain rules surrounding ones behaviour in a
kåta. In the middle of the kåta you find árran, the fireplace which provides warmth and light. Opposite the door you find boassjo, the kitchen. In the old days this was a holy place that one must not walk across. One of the Goddesses of the kåta lived under the kitchen. Firewood was kept by the door, this was also where the dogs slept. If you arrived as a guest to the kåta, you sat down by the door until you where invited to enter.
Today the kåta is used mostly during the summer whilst the marking of the reindeer calfs take place.
