The Sámis Lars Tuorda and Anders Rassa participated in Adolf Erik Nordenskiölds expedition to West Greenland in 1883. On skis they went alone to the middle of the island to find out if the theory of an ice-free and forest clad inland could be true. Upon return to Sweden their achievement on skis was questioned. Nordenskiöld therefore arranged a 220 km skiing competition. It was won by Lars Tuorda that skiid even faster than he had done in Greenland.
