Day-trip to the reindeers
The mountain Sámi move their reindeers from the mountains to the forest during the winter. It is common practice that one family and their relatives keep their reindeers together in one place during this time, a so called winter group. The reindeer herders in a group like this spend a lot of time with their animals during this time of the year. They make sure that the reindeers are well, have enough to eat, are not threatened by predators and that they don´t spread out to much.
Join a reindeer herder on a day-trip to the reindeers in the winter pastures. You travel on a snowmobile, a form of transportation that the reindeer herder is very familiar with after spending countless miles on it every year. You make lunch over the fire in a traditional Sámi tent, an experience in itself!

| A Sámi village is not a cluster of houses with Sámis living in them as it might sound on the name. A Sámi village is a geographical area divided into summer, spring/autumn and winter grazing grounds. It has a similar organisation to an economical association for reindeer herders. In Sweden there are 51 Sámi villages from Idre in the south to Karesuando in the north. |
