Visit to a Sámi settlement

Visit Bietsávrre summer settlement. The name Bietsávrre is very old, it means the pinetree lake. Today there are no pinetrees growing here, but findings in the mires has shown that these trees grew here during the Stone-age when the tree-border was situated 200 m higher up than it is today. In Bietsávrre the Kuoljok family are your hosts. Here you can see how they use the fish that they have caught and bake bread the same way as they have done for generations amongst many other things.

You decide yourself if you would like to stay overnight in the settlement or just visit for the day.

Timeperiod:  June - August
Minimum: 4 persons
Maximum: 30 persons

Mountain-sorrel (Rumex acetosa lapponicus) has been one of the most important greens for the Sámi. During the summer they would pick sorrel, boil it, mix it with milk and fill it into barrels. If the barrel was kept in a cold spring the sorrel would keep until spring. Many Sámis still pick and boil sorrel, if you mix it with sugar and eat it with cream or milk you get an outstanding dessert.
